Jung-dong Jangmal Dodang-gut

Jangmal Dodang-gut, held from October to November of every year in Jangmal Dodang house in Jung-dong, means a “ritual performed together by the people of Jangssi Village”. A joint community ritual, Dodang Gut, includes the elements of thanksgiving and wishing for the wellbeing and peace of the village. Jangmal Dodang-gut is performed by Dodang Grandfather and a shaman. Jo Han-chun and Oh Su-bok, two shamans that oversee such rituals, were designated as Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 98 in 1990.

Witsosa Daedong Sansinje is held biennially on October 3rd of the Lunar Calendar in Sosabon 1-dong. On the day of the ritual, Sansinje starts by erecting jangseung’s at the entrance and rear of the village and, afterwards, all residents of the village clean the common well together. Then, rice cakes are made out of harvested crops and, after gathering a variety of fruit, a ritual is performed in Dodangsan. This Sansinje is our ancestors’ traditional folk event through which they wished for the wellbeing, health and prosperity of the village residents as well as extermination of all evil spirits to avoid various misfortunes.

Meonmaru Dodang Umul Daedongje

Meonmaru Dodang Umul Daedongje is a village-wide festival held every year in Wonjong 1-dong. Dating back 250 years ago, people with various family names have lived in Wonjong-dong and used a common well, which is called “Meonmaru Dodang Umul”, and “Dodang” means “together with the people of the village”. Umulje is held twice a year, once each in spring and summer. During the spring, it is held on March 1st and helps wish for a year of good crops. During the summer, it is held on July 1st as an important opportunity for village residents to take a proper rest and foster friendships.
